Anadenanthera peregrina is a perennial tree of the Anadenanthera genus native to the Caribbean and South America. It grows up to 20 m (66 ft) tall, having a horny bark. It is used as wood and the beans and falling leaves are toxic to cattle. Photo of Fire Dragon of gaia protecting us against dark forcees in this Magical 2 in 1 workshop
Yopo is a visionary snuff used by various tribes in South America and through Archeological evidence it has been fund that this tradition is over 4000 years old. Nowadays, it’s mostly used by the tribes in the Amazonian Jungle such as – Yanomami, the Sikuani and the Piaroa – who have managed to fend off the influence of the western world, for their spiritual and healing purposes. In these traditions, they inhale this shamanic medicine in order to have the ‘vision’ to see what healing is needed for themselves, their community or for the patient they are healing.
The Yopo tree, Anadenanthera peregrine, thrives only in the tropics, where it prefers drier locations such as the savanna-like regions of the Orinoquía plains. The leathery, dark brown seedpods grow as long as 35cm and they contain a very flat reddish brown seed 1-2cm across. The dried seeds are lightly roasted and then ground into a fine powder that is mixed with an alkalizing powdered river shell and ground plantain leaves. The alkalinity from the ground shell helps to activate the psychoactive alkaloids found in the Yopo tree seeds.
The snuff is then inhaled through a hollow bird bone tube or another applicator during a ritual ceremony. The Yopo snuff contains a combination of DMT, Bufotenin, and 5-MeO-DMT psychoactive compounds and produces a visionary experience. Yopo shamans describe this experience as an opening of the 3rd eye to be able to perceive into the light of the non-physical spiritual dimensions.
Central to these tribes is the use of prayers and Icaros (sacred chants) to invoke healing energies. They believe that their word and the tonal vibration of their prayer is the very force of creation. For every imbalance and sickness that is created, there is a corresponding prayer to heal that sickness.
In the early onset of the medicine, there can be a set of strong discomfort, mainly on the upper respiratory system. After this, one can feel some pressure in the head and feel some nausea, which can also lead to purging. After this short initial period of discomfort, the visionary effects become to come on. From ideas, time travel and abstract geometrical patterns, yopo gives you a very deeply healing visionary experience.
This plant like the Ayahuasca visions help us to go to our origin and to do a consultation from our Soul with the Spirits of Nature. Like a doctor it goes reviewing your life all the way from your adulthood, childhood, birth, through your ancestral tree of life and all the way back to the origin of your soul.
It can be said that yopo is a cousin of the sacred vine, Ayahuasca in two ways. One is that it also contains DMT. Secondly because yopo is usually ingested along with the Banisteriopsis caapi vine, one of the two plants that are used to prepare the ayahuasca brew. Although yopo can have a powerful effect by itself, when combined with Banisteriopsis caapi its effects are potentiated.
This Yopo medicine is often used in our week long retreats as we have found it very supportive in the opening of our Spiritual Sight and cleansing of our emotional and physical body. This supports our Soul to be open and properly prepared for a even deeper communion with the Grandmother Spirit of the Ayahuasca.
